Howl (Live) 03:56
Howl I’ve sat in the spotlight and I’ve spoken aloud, Ripped open my chest and let blood fall on the ground. It’s brought me no pleasure and it’s brought me no gain, And now soap and water have erased the stain. Crayons drew me in but they went over the lines, Tried to use Monopoly money to hush up my crime. But there were no sirens and no blue lights, So I took out my bow to go hunting for a good time. I stepped out of a cage that I made, A willing audience to serenade. The best minds can be so very foul. Listen to me howl. We step out of cages we make, With willing audiences to serenade. The best minds are always so foul, Listen, listen, listen to me howl. I’ve got red lipstick on my new identity, Don’t be shy. New skin does not replace old, I feel a comfort in these dear old bones. Now I get the urge to throw myself at the sky, Go floating through the clouds, Watching the world from a-high. And when I touch down I’ll send the past a card; A new woman, but with the old I’m reconciled. I stepped out of a cage that I made, A willing audience to serenade. The best minds can be so very foul. Listen to me howl. We step out of cages we make, With willing audiences to serenade. The best minds are always so foul, Listen, listen, listen to me howl. You make me, you make me, you make me hungry. You make me, you make me, you make me hungry. You make me, you make me, you make me hungry. You make me, you make me, you make me hungry. I stepped out of a cage that I made, A willing audience to serenade. The best minds can be so very foul. Listen to me howl. We step out of cages we make, With willing audiences to serenade. The best minds are always so foul, Listen, listen, listen to me howl. © Eliza Delf 2022

Stealing My Fear Away I saw a pair of magpie lovers, I said ‘keep your joy’. Those with the eyes of a child can’t lament, They’ve seen nothing destroyed. The sweetness of songs of my innocence. Untainted by hard-edged experience. Ooh (sometimes I wish for the life of a fool) Don’t let, let go, don’t let, let go (but how sweet the taste of a thought) Don’t let, let go, don’t let, let go (swallow that sugary pill) Don’t let, let go, don’t let, let go (hold on to the gold that you’ve caught) Bats have been flying over my head like drops in the sky. A hare crossed my path as I walked in the woods, looked me dead in the eyes. The sweetness of songs of my innocence, Untainted by hard-edged experience. Ooh (sometimes I wish for the life of a fool) Don’t let, let go, don’t let, let go (but how sweet the taste of a thought) Don’t let, let go, don’t let, let go (swallow that sugary pill) Don’t let, let go, don’t let, let go (hold on to the gold that you’ve caught) Stealing my fear away [x 3] Leaving the best part for me. Wavelength I can't describe the feeling Of standing on the sand, bare feet, Complete overwhelming emotion God knows what this feeling is, maybe peace And the ocean reflects the moon How soon every stress slips away on the wind And the day was as good as any I've had before, Ooh I could do with some more On another wavelength, I feel myself breathe finally, Oh a little bit of unity. And there's no need to escape the moment Because the moment is sunny. The clock doesn't tick in the same way it does at home, Every step in the foam Is a step I cherish, no need to count the minutes. My eyes don't flicker, never unnerved, I look around and see the people that are birdsong On a sunny day, Never fly away. The very happiest place. On another wavelength, I feel myself breathe finally, Oh a little bit of unity. And there's no need to escape the moment Because the moment is sunny. Oh, locked away in my mind. How weird and wonderful, How lucky am I, How lucky am I, How lucky am I On another wavelength, I feel myself breathe finally, Oh a little bit of unity. And there's no need to escape the moment Because the moment is sunny. © Eliza Delf 2022

If She Were To Fall She saw something through the trees, and she chose to follow One, two, three and she’d entered the hollow It wasn’t the sort of place for such a foolish girl One, two, three, a hedonistic whirl Oh, submit to the cries Oh, with those gaping eyes All she wanted was to be unwound To close her eyes and to stop that sound Oh, that sound Oh, that sound All she wanted was to be unwound To close her eyes and to stop that sound Oh, that sound Oh, that sound A calming drought could slow the thoughts, but a man could make them disappear Lace, taste, everything she’d want to hear Oh, she let him spin her round, they were dancing on the edge ‘Close your eyes and trust in me’ he said Oh, what big teeth you have Oh, on her knees and prayed All she wanted was to be unwound To close her eyes and to stop that sound Oh, that sound Oh, that sound All she wanted was to be unwound To close her eyes and to stop that sound Oh, that sound Oh, that sound © Eliza Delf 2022

Singing With My Ghosts The walls have long crumbled, you’re all in the earth now. I picture it, see your face as it is, As much as my mind allows. But as the chords in my head progress, I call to you. You rise up, rise up, draw your lips back, And the chorus starts to come through. Singing with my ghosts, The joyous sound of my memories. Singing with my ghosts, Across the centuries. Crows are said to bring death, They fly away when it’s come. Who sings in The After? It’s left to us, it’s left to us. But when my voice trails off, What happens when we forget? My darlings departed, Strings break on the marionette. Singing with my ghosts, The joyous sound of my memories. Singing with my ghosts, Across the centuries. [Coda] © Eliza Delf 2022

My Familiar My familiar, my familiar. I was found at the edge of a woman, And left a little broken, And a little bit saved, Struck down and dazed, Struck down and dazed. My familiar, my familiar. The thread that led you to me, Was what I used to escape. I walked out to the sunrise, And looked for looking’s sake, Looked for looking’s sake. I put my bones back piece by piece, I steal the blood back from the beast, I take the most I give the least. This woman will not fall. My familiar, my familiar. How safe it felt to be entwined, You decide and I comply, But here’s the break. For my sake, For my sake. My familiar, my familiar. That goodbye was against my will, You took it and you hold it still. I hope you hold it near, I hope it hurts to hear, I hope it hurts to hear. I put my bones back piece by piece, I steal the blood back from the beast, I take the most I give the least. This woman will not fall. I put my bones back piece by piece, I steal the blood back from the beast, I take the most I give the least. This woman will not fall. © Eliza Delf 2022

Heaviness In The Head There’s a heaviness in the head today, There are stones tied to the body. A flickering projection plays, the windowpane has gone foggy. A touch from skin would help with the moment. A grey backdrop acts as a solvent. Don’t wait, it won’t pass. Through the looking glass. There’s a forest in my eyes and a brook in my brain. Pull the flowers over my head, asphyxiate yourself sane. Keep breathing, even when you’re alone. Don’t dig up the seeds you’ve already sown. No-one will ever know, no one will ever know. I’ll go where the bees go, Begin at the beginning. Clarity comes with the sunrise, But I want a light more forgiving. I’ll tear out my own eyes, And wonder why I’m blind. There’s a forest in my eyes and a brook in my brain. Pull the flowers over my head, asphyxiate yourself sane. Keep breathing, even when you’re alone. Don’t dig up the seeds you’ve already sown. No-one will ever know, no one will ever know. No-one will ever know [x 12] © Eliza Delf 2022

In The Court Of The Queen Of Strangeness You conjure wings and claws and fangs, You see an odyssey, your cloven feet. Eyes that have been open, That have stared right at the sun. Stares that have tried to hurt us, I don’t just see a woman. Come to court, they cry, and there you stand with a crown. Bow down for the queen of strangeness. A woman like me and a woman like you. A woman like me and a woman like you. Your king lives amongst the green, I could love him if he let me. Dancing in the circus, putting heads on your trophy shelf. Words sparkle and slip from your lips, I try to catch them, but they fall too quickly. Come to court, they cry, and there you stand with a crown. Bow down for the queen of strangeness. A woman like me and a woman like you. A woman like me and a woman like you. [Repeat x 2] © Eliza Delf 2022

Penance We’ll be waiting to catch you out, It’s a witch hunt, But the witches do the hunting With a pitchfork. We know you don’t like magic, That’s what it’s for. It’s easy to be a big man, shake all the big hands, When every hour you earn a grand. But it’s easy for us to see through, We know you, We’re here too And we’re not a fan. We know who you are, Get rid of that smile. We’ll be waiting in the wings, On the wings of the women who’ve brought us this far. We know who you are, Get rid of that smile. We’ll be waiting in the wings, On the wings of the women who’ve brought us this far. Get out your pen, Get ready to ratify once again. We’ll lobby, march, lead the charge, Tell your friends. We’re not a spare rib, or a spare part, We’ve assembled and we’re moving fast. We’re with Pankhurst, And it likely will hurt, But we’ll endure, we’re not demure, We use deeds not words. We know who you are, Get rid of that smile. We’ll be waiting in the wings, On the wings of the women who’ve brought us this far. We know you are, Get rid of that smile. We’ll be waiting in the wings, On the wings of the women who’ve brought us this far. Back then it was herbs, That was our curse. Black cats around your feet Could send you six feet deep. Sent by the royal fool and his Daemonology. They’ve always been scared of a tongue a little loose, Opinions will get you sent to the noose. We know who you are, Get rid of that smile. We’ll be waiting in the wings, On the wings of the women who’ve brought us this far. We know you are, Get rid of that smile. We’ll be waiting in the wings, On the wings of the women who’ve brought us this far. So many lives left unlived, So many tales untold, So many songs unsung So many great loves gone cold. So many lives left unlived, So many tales untold, So many songs unsung So many great loves gone cold. You took so much without regret. The time has come to pay the debt. We know who you are, Get rid of that smile. We’ll be waiting in the wings, On the wings of the women who’ve brought us this far. We know who you are, Get rid of that smile. We’ll be waiting in the wings, On the wings of the women who’ve brought us this far. © Eliza Delf 2022

Into the Wilderness How strange it is, how free it feels to feel alone, on my own. How mind-spinningly, shallow-breathingly terrifying too. How odd it is how tree roots grow around the telephone, my telephone. And muffle the ringing and strangle the singing of those who call you, try to call you. Eyes in the undergrowth are watching me, But I’m watching them. I’m not lost, I’m in the wilderness I’m not lost, I’m in the wilderness I’m not lost, I’m in the wilderness Waiting for you. A heartbeat is company, However small the heart, so small a heart. A stranger is no stranger than a friend. Is it desperation that has brought me out into the dark, oh it’s so dark. Is it desperation that’ll drive me back again, I go again. Eyes in the undergrowth are watching me, But I’m watching them. I’m not lost, I’m in the wilderness I’m not lost, I’m in the wilderness I’m not lost, I’m in the wilderness Waiting for you. It’s a funny thing how monumental these moments feel, We try to feel. Though moments pass and we will all forget. The lightning could strike me, my body could smite me, But skin can heal, we try to heal. Anything can be cured when there’s peace in the head, Inside this head, oh. Eyes in the undergrowth are watching me, But I’m watching them. I’m not lost, I’m in the wilderness I’m not lost, I’m in the wilderness I’m not lost, I’m in the wilderness Waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting. I’m not lost, I’m in the wilderness I’m not lost, I’m in the wilderness I’m not lost, I’m in the wilderness Waiting for you. © Eliza Delf 2022

about

Like stripping off the varnish and paint, this live performance recorded at Fine City Recording Studio in Norwich reveals the grain and texture of the original songs. Eliza’s vocals are more dramatic and vivid – removing the more sophisticated and elegant production of the album. These songs have burst out of the zoo and are running wild!
The individual elements of the instrumentation can be more clearly heard and appreciated as Eliza’s talented band of musicians, The Wilderness Collective, add creative flourishes to the original arrangements. The dark is darker, and the light is lighter – as Eliza draws you into her enchanting, beguiling, and sometimes unnerving, musical world.
